Destructcert is not yet available for use

As of this page's publication, Destructcert is still in development. The homepage describes what the tool will do when it launches. There is nothing to download, install, or sign up for.

If you are evaluating Destructcert for your organisation, the information on this site accurately describes the planned functionality. The tool has not changed its scope or requirements since the description was published.

We have no mailing list and no early-access programme. The best way to stay informed is to bookmark the homepage. When the tool is available, it will be announced there and on this help page.

What exactly does Destructcert do?

Destructcert will let you enter IT assets (by serial number, make, media type, and sanitization method) and produce a numbered certificate of destruction. Every asset entered will be validated against NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 — if a sanitization method does not apply to the selected media type (e.g. "Clear" on an SSD), the entry will be rejected with a citation from the standard.

The output is a printable certificate with per-asset detail: serial number, make/model, media type, sanitization method, and a statement that the information was entered by the operator. The tool does not itself verify that any drive was actually sanitized.

Is there a downloadable application?

No. Destructcert will be a single-page web application that runs in your browser. There is nothing to install. All processing happens client-side — your asset data never leaves your machine.

What formats can I use to enter assets?

Two methods are planned:

  • Structured form — one asset at a time with immediate validation feedback. Enter serial number, make/model, media type, and sanitization method.
  • Paste batch — comma- or tab-separated lines for bulk entry. The parser will flag rows that do not validate so you can review before generating the certificate.

There will be no file upload or API import.

How is the certificate delivered?

The certificate will be displayed on screen as an HTML document. You can print it to PDF using your browser's print dialog (Ctrl+P / Cmd+P). No PDF is generated server-side, and no output is emailed anywhere. The certificate is yours to download or print the moment it is generated.

Is my asset data stored anywhere?

No. Destructcert processes all data in your browser. No asset data — serial numbers, make/model, media types, sanitization methods, or certificate contents — is transmitted to any server, stored on any remote system, or logged. Closing the tab discards everything.

The only thing stored in your browser is your theme preference (light or dark mode), via browser localStorage.

How much does it cost?

Destructcert is currently offered free of charge while in development. When paid certificate generation becomes available, it will use a one-time purchase model — you pay per certificate or batch, not a subscription. Pricing will be published before any charges are introduced.

Any checkout buttons visible during initial rollout process test payments only via Stripe in test mode. No real card will be charged.

Does Destructcert certify that my drives were actually destroyed?

No. Destructcert documents the sanitization information you enter and validates it against NIST 800-88. It does not itself verify that any drive was sanitized, destroyed, or otherwise processed. The certificate states plainly that it records what the operator entered.

An auditor who needs independent verification of sanitization should consult the operator's own records and processes — Destructcert is a documentation tool, not a verification authority.

What Destructcert does not do — stated plainly

These are design decisions, not missing features. A tool that validates against a standard and produces a document has no reason to store, send, or authenticate anything.

No server-side storage — closing the tab discards everything
No PDF export — the user prints to PDF from the browser's print dialog
No file upload — data is entered via structured form or paste textarea
No API — all processing happens in the browser via vanilla JavaScript
No sign-in or accounts — there is nothing to sign in to
No email delivery — no output is sent anywhere; download or print is the only export
No physical destruction verification — Destructcert documents what was entered, it does not confirm any drive was actually sanitized
